A living legend in his native New Zealand, Greg
Murphy is very much a fan favourite on both sides of the Tasman.
Making the move across to a Castrol Edge Racing Commodore run
by Paul Morris Motorsport, Murphy is looking to move back to
the front of the field after a couple of tough seasons.
First coming to notice in Australia in
open wheelers, Murphy spent two seasons driving Audis for
Brad Jones Racing in Super Touring before moving to the Holden
Racing Team in 1997 in V8 Supercar racing.
Winner of the Sandown 500 in 1996 and 1997 alongside Craig
Lowndes, Murphy found himself without a drive in 1998 and,
after attempting to create a career overseas, the Kiwi focused
his attentions on Australia and spent two seasons with Gibson
Motorsport before the Kmart Racing Team was established in
2001.
The Kiwi had plenty of great results with
the team, including back-to-back Bathurst wins with Rick Kelly
in 2003/2004, and finished runner-up in the championship in
2002/03 before heading to two largely unsuccessful seasons
with Supercheap Auto/PWR Racing.
He moved to Tasman Motorsport – later
known as Sprint Gas Racing – for 2007 and success has
generally eluded Murphy ever since, with the team closing down
at the end of last season. But as one door closes, another
opens and Murphy will line up alongside Russell Ingall in a
two-car team from PMM this year. |
