Garry and Warren Smith Holden continue their support of the Oakleigh Police and their Senior Citizens Register by handing over the 4th vehicle, a new Holden Epica, to Senior Constable June Plant. The Oakleigh Police commenced the Senior Citizens Register in August 1994 with the objective of improving the level of communication between the police and elderly thereby enhancing their safety. Senior Constable June Plant is dedicated full time to the registry. She personally visits each applicant in their home to build the necessary rapport and make a proper assessment of each individual situation.

In August 1995 the Registry had over 400 people registered and today has over 1200 names. Constable Plant promotes a positive interaction between the police and the elderly by establishing personal communication advising on matters such as security, fire prevention and safer and confident living. She arranges the installation of smoke alarms and telephones, and acts in a referall capacity to government agencies. Additionally she lectures the wider community in respect to Confident and Safer Living Programs.

Health considerations, medication and next of kin details are recorded on the registry data base which can be accessed by station personnel in the event of an emergency. Trained volunteers assist June in maintaining follow up contact by phone. Telephone contact calls by volunteers in 2001 were 6000.

  The register program is centred around the elderly, their environment and their perceptions to achieve the following:
Reduce the social isolation, which contributes to the anxiety and vulnerability of elderly Australians;
Cater for all levels of elderly person's concerns for their safety and security;
Offer advice on matters of personal safety at home and outside the home;
Encourage awareness of merchandise available in relation to altering others in the case of an accidental fall or heart attack;
Offer assessment and advice on the environment;
Provide access to means to make practical changes around the home; and
Act as a network to be able to refer elderly people to outside agencies if police cannot be of assistance, e.g. Meals on Wheels, Local Government office or agencies.

Prior to August 1995, this community project was being hampered due to the lack of transport for Senior Constable Plant. There were not enough police vehicles available to take one off the road from regular patrol for Constable Plant to use. She is still adamant today that the project would not be the success it is and will continue to be without the vehicle Garry and Warren Smith provide to the Oakleigh Police and the community.

Garry and Warren Smith is promoted at all times by the Oakleigh police with any of their other special projects, not just the elderly citizens project.
